Language Arts and Science with NASA:Mysterious Worlds and Words
Grade: 3rd Grade
Objectives: 1. Students will use a dictionary to find the meanings of unknown
words. 2. Students will use context to discover meaning. 3. Students will use
knowledge of prefixes and/or suffixes to find meaning in words. 4. Students will
perform investigations and predict/confirm outcomes in writing.
CDE Science: Investigation and Experimentation: 5. Scientific progress is made
by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis
for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three
strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations.
Students will: 5d. Predict the outcome of a simple investigation and compare
the result with the prediction. 5e. Collect data in an investigation and analyze
those data to develop a logical conclusion.

Anticipatory Set: Teacher will lead a discussion using the website/LCD
projector. The site is: http://www.nineplanets.org/titan.html .
Critical Tasks: 1. This activity is much like a word search. 2. It is designed
to be used with an LCD and is to be led by the teacher. 3. Collaborative
grouping can be used during the completion of the activity. 4. Reward climate
can be used to accelerate lesson. 5. Findings can be shared by all and then
students must note findings on paper (to be turned in). 6. Artifacts will be
turned in for teacher comments. 7. Dictionaries (YES!).
Assessment: Should be informal by teacher through observation. Using the Master
Effort/Achievement Rubric is good. Create your own rubric (Rubistar). Teacher
should collect artifacts and pass back with comments and grades.
