Exercise

Title: Postcards From Mars

Grade Level: Third Grade

Objectives: 1. Students will read aloud Internet text. 2. Students will create
a paragraph. 3. Students will know that Mars is a planet in the Solar System.

CDE Science: Earth Sciences 4. Objects in the sky move in regular and
predictable patterns. As a basis for under-standing this concept: d. Students
know that Earth is one of several planets that orbit the Sun and that the Moon
orbits Earth.

CDE Language Arts: Decoding and Word Recognition 1.2: Decode regular
multi-syllabic words. 1.3 Read aloud narrative and expository text fluently and
accurately and with appropriate pacing, intonation, and expression. Writing
Strategies: Students write clear and coherent sentences and paragraphs that
develop a central idea. Their writing shows they consider the audience and
purpose. Students progress through the stages of the writing process (e.g.,
prewriting, drafting, revising, editing successive versions). Organization and
Focus 1.1: Create a single paragraph. 1a: Develop a topic sentence.1b: Include
simple supporting facts and details.

Anticipatory Set: Visit and navigate the site located at
http://www.nineplanets.org/mars.html .

Primary Website: Locate and utilize the site located at
http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/ .

Critical Teacher Tasks: 1. Teacher must have an LCD projector and a live
Internet connection. 2. Teacher must navigate and explain both websites in front
of students. 3. Teacher must facilitate the discussion. 4. Teacher should
have a number of Mars posters/manipulatives available. 5. This is a two-hour
block from start to finished copy. 6. Teacher should keep an eye on the progress
of all students. 7. Student work should comprise of a paragraph about Mars
mounted on construction paper next to a student drawn illustration.

Critical Student Tasks: 1. Students must actively participate in
instruction/discussion. 2. Students will follow instructions. 3. Peer helpers
andleaders is a MUST. 4. The editing process must be followed. 5. Read text
aloud and with proper pace. 6. Students must ask questions and record answers.
7. Students must actively seek information. 8. Illustrations will be best effort
only! 9. Students will create single paragraphs. 10. Students can present work
orally.

Assessment: Reading of text and Mars info is done informally and orally by
teacher observation. The paragraph is graded according to a paragraph rubric
(standards based) and the Master Effort/Achievement Rubric that I created.
