Grade Level: Third
Objectives: 1. Student will know that telescopes magnify the appearance of
objects in outer space. 2. Students will distinguish the main idea and
supporting ideas from Internet text.
CDE Science: Earth Sciences 4c. Students know telescopes magnify the appearance
of some distant objects in the sky, including the Moon and the planets. The
number of stars that can be seen through telescopes is dramatically greater than
the number that can be seen by the unaided eye.
CDE Language Arts: Reading Comprehension 2.3 Demonstrate comprehension by
identifying answers in the text. 2.5 Distinguish the main idea and supporting
details in expository text.

Critical Teacher Tasks: 1. This is an individual activity. 2. Coordinate help

Critical Student Tasks: 1. Students will collaborate. 2. Students will work as
peer helpers. 3. Students will read Internet text an d view the pictures. 4.
Students will use graphic organizers to organize their thoughts. 5. Students
will ask questions and record data from observations. 6. Students will work hard
and effectively. 7. Students will refer to the E/A rubric for expectations. 8.
Students will orally share their writings with the class.
Assessment: Informally through teacher observation. Formally by using the
effort and achievement rubric.
