Language Arts and Science with NASA: MARS ADVENTURE
This is the Mars site! Use it because it is perfect for any lesson dealing with Mars!. Look for more in the future! see more
Exercise
Objectives: 1. Students will know that Mars is our neighbor to the Earth. 2.
Students will be able to compare Earth to Mars. 3. Students will create
comparison documents using screenshots and typed information. 4. Students will
be able to devise one paragraph and type it according to the rules of the Master
Rubric. 5. Students will research the Internet in a responsible manner.
CDE Science: Earth Sciences 4d: Students know that the Earth is one of several
planets that orbit the Sun and that the Moon orbits the Earth. Investigation and
Experimentation 5a: Repeat observations and improve accuracy and know that the
results of similar scientific investigations seldom turn out exactly the same
because of differences in the things being investigated, methods being used, or
uncertainty in the investigation. 5c: Use numerical data in describing and
comparing objects, events and measurements. 5d: Predict the outcome of a simple
investigation and compare the result within the prediction. 5e: Collect data in
an investigation and analyze those data to develop a logical conclusion.
CDE Language Arts: Writing 1.1: organization and Focus: Create a single
paragraph. 1.1a: Develop a topic sentence. 1.1b: Include simple supporting facts
and details. Evaluation and Revision: 1.4; Revise drafts to improve the
coherence and logical progression of ideas by using an established rubric.
ISTE/NETS: #1; Use keyboards and other common input and output devices
efficiently and effectively. #3; Discuss basic issues related to the responsible
use of technology and information and describe personal consequences of
inappropriate use. #4: Use general purpose productivity tools and peripherals to
support personal productivity, remediate skill deficits, and facilitate
learning throughout the curriculum. #5: Use technology tools for individual and
collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create
knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom. Materials:
pencils, paper, Internet, computers (5), LCD projector, Power Point, printer,
slates, dry-erase markers, science journals, small group desk design.
Anticipatory Set: Students will visit the website at
http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/targetFamily/Mars .
Primary Website: http://marsweb.jpl.nasa.gov/
Procedures: 1. Teacher will show the anticipatory set website to the students
on the LCD projector. 2. Teacher will scroll through the images and facilitate
an oral discussion. 3. Teacher will then create a VENN diagram and compare and
contrast the two planets with each other as a whole-group. 4. Students wi ll hand
write their 1/2 page observations. 5. Teacher will instruct on elements of note
taking and summary writing. 6. Students will work on the computers creating
their Word document fact sheets. 7. Fact sheets will include screen shots. 8.
One new typed paragraph (narrative commentary) must now be added. 9. Students
will present orally.
Assessment: Informal: per teacher observations and coaxing during the coursework
and class time. Formal: Students will be graded according to the Master Rubric
(Appendix A). After the completion of grading, students will be able to take
home the grading sheet for parent review. Copyright 2004 Troy Tenhet Jr.
