The California State University (CSU) and MERLOT have partnered to showcase how and why faculty have adopted Open Educational Resources (OER) to facilitate equitable access to course materials. In the present Faculty Showcase, Brandilynn Villarreal, Ph.D. of Humboldt State University describes how she adopted OER for a course in Human Development.
The open e-textbook she selected provides an exploration of lifespan development from a psychological perspective. Consistent with the goals of the CSU/MERLOT partnership, the main motivation for adopting an open textbook was to support her students and enhance the course experience (from both educational and affordability points of view). This showcase/ePortfolio links to the online OER e-textbook that she uses (hosted on Open Textbook Library). The students can access the open e-textbook online or as a .pdf.
NOTE: This review references both the faculty showcase/portfolio in which Dr. Villareal shares her OER approach as well as certain elements of the selected open e-textbook.
