Potential Effectiveness as a Teaching Tool
Rating:
Strengths:
The learning goals were presented throughout the video. Each topic had its own introduction. The video could be used in a variety of different business courses to demonstrate leadership. It could also be used to show film archetypes.
Fictional characters from several movies and television shows were used as examples of leadership styles.
The presentation provides the prerequisite knowledge for understanding leadership trait theory and leadership styles by referring to historical studies, decades, and the societal context in which the theory or style emerged. The presenter points out the arcs between the different leaderships to show how each one developed from the previous one. He refers back to previous videos, provides focus points on slides, and asks the learner questions to reinforce learning and encourage further reflection or application of the topic.
The presenter provides multiple links to other videos which provide greater detail on the theories discussed.
Concerns:
The overarching goal is to provide a minicourse on leadership theories, and as the presenter notes, this is not an all-inclusive presentation because it is only about the top 10 theories (in his opinion).
Goals should be developed as they relate to how this material is used in a course.
An instructor would need to provide or create an assessment to assess student learning outcomes.
Ease of Use for Both Students and Faculty
Rating:
Strengths:
The material was easy to use. It was a YouTube video.
The topics were bookmarked.
Transcripts and closed captioning were also provided for accessibility.
The video is audially and visually appealing. There was music in the background.
Artifacts, animated title slides, bulleted lists, and photos added visual appeal to the video.
Finally, the presenter broke the fourth wall and asked the learner questions. He gave instructions to answer the questions in comments section. There were many people who watched the video and left comments.
Concerns:
None
Other Issues and Comments:
The video is short, easy to follow, and the information is effectively explained.
