Description:

This course provides an analysis of the theories, research findings and instructional practices in foreign and second language learning, with practical illustrations in the areas of French as a second language. Students will learn how language-teaching methods have evolved since the1960s.

Pedagogical Approach

A variety of teaching approaches (behaviorist, audio-visual, communicative, cognitive, etc.) will be examined with reference to theoretical issues and historical background. Special emphasis will be placed on the teaching of specific skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking), culture, the integration of technology, and on the roles of the teacher and the learner in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes

Critical Thinking and Analysis: Ability to reflect on their own language learning process, apply metacognitive strategies, and analyze various second language theories and teaching approaches

Communication Skills: Participants can participate in discussions and debates utilizing appropriate vocabulary, specific terminology and appropriate grammatical structures

Receptive and Productive Skills: Learners can read and understand various teacher-related texts and write reports with increasing complexity

Cultural Awareness: Students demonstrate understanding of French cultural practices, traditions, and perspectives

Assessment

Assignments and evaluation: two quizzes (2x10%); two tests (2 x 20%); final test (25%); overall assessment: class preparation through attentive reading and study of all required course documents; active and respectful participation in class discussions, attendance and punctuality (15%).

 

Other Information

The tests and quizzes in this course will be based on the lectures and documents presented in class and posted on the course menu on Blackboard. The questions will be similar to the ones discussed in class and will include definitions of pedagogical terminology, discussion and clarification of concepts and theories presented and studied in the course, reflection on own second language learning process. Important information regarding each quiz/test will be posted two weeks in advance on the course website.
