Impact of Vehicle Weight Reduction on a Class 8 Truck for Fuel Economy Benefits
In this study funded by The Aluminum Association, Ricardo evaluates class 8 truck and trailer fuel economy improvements through the implementation of lightweight materials. All tests were performed in simulations utilizing published and Ricardo proprietary data within three drive cycles. Its concluded when comparing an aluminum intensive truck to a steel intensive truck, that the aluminum truck has a 1%-6% increase in fuel economy with an unloaded trailer and 2%-5% increase in fuel economy with a half loaded trailer (40,000 lbs. GVW).
