Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule

These guidelines from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are intended to help funeral providers comply with the FTC Funeral Rule. The Funeral Rule went into effect on April 30, 1984 and was revised in 1994. The Funeral Rule outlines requirements that specify that consumers be given accurate, itemized price information and various other disclosures about funeral goods and services. In addition, the Rule lays out prohibitions for funeral providers. Examples include not requiring the purchase of a casket for direct cremation and misrepresenting legal, crematory, and cemetery requirements.
