How are Landforms Represented on Flat Maps?

This site, part of Exploring Earth Investigation by McDougal Littell and TERC, examines how Earth's landforms are represented on flat maps. The investigations "were designed to build students' knowledge of Earth Science conceptsand to raise student awareness of Earth as a system of interconnected components and processes." Here, visitors can find lessons on how topography translates from aerial photo to map, how to read spacing and elevation on topographic maps, 3-D topographic maps, and space-based technology. Many sections have illustrative images and interactive features, which help students, understand the topics presented, and the final section ends with questions for students to further explore as well as a link to some NASA datasets. This is an excellent site for any Earth Science classroom as an introductory lecture or as an out-of-class exploration for students.
