Fire Wars: Fire Season Statistics

Fire Wars: Fire Season Statistics

This classroom activity allows students to extrapolate information and further questions for investigation from fire season statistics. Having information about previous fire seasons can help land managers look for areas they may need to monitor in coming years. Each group of students will discuss the data as it is currently presented to see what information is conveyed, what general conclusions students can draw, and what, if any, patterns they see. Then students consider how the data might be reconfigured to illustrate different aspects of the data set. The groups will decide how to present the information in a more meaningful way such as tables, bar graphs, pie graphs, or some other way. Based on what they find in the data, the group will decide what kind of campaign they would design to reduce wildland fires. The activity has a stated objective, a student handout, procedure, activity answer, and links for more information.
