"The book ‘Education and technology: critical approaches’ presents a collection of texts entirely coherent with its title. These pieces question preconceptions and advance original (and surprising!) approaches to the use and appropriation of technologies in educational environments, whether schools or universities.
The chapters seek to locate the most recent technologies within the current context of advanced capitalism, tackling contemporary questions such as the increasing (and veiled) use of our personal data in educational platforms ‘in the cloud’, the (not always explicit) relationship between private enterprise and educational technology projects, the use of standardised assessment and traditional teaching materials periodically offered in new technical guises (educational products) and, also, technological ideologies and utopias and their relationship with the exploitation of teachers’ work.
The various chapters urge the reader to think without subterfuges about technologies, their everyday movements and tangible creations, encouraging them to abandon the technophilia that still predominates in academic work in this area. The organisers rightly stress the need for us to overcome binaries (technology either destroys or saves) and to pay closer attention to contingencies and practices conducted in different movements of contemporary educational technology.
Congratulations to the organisers for the publication of a bilingual volume of such breadth that brings to a Lusophone audience the work of authors yet little known. For more critical volumes!"
