This textbook was developed as part of the Textbook Transformation Grants for the Affordable Learning Georgia project. Affordable Learning Georgia Grants Collections are intended to provide faculty with the frameworks to quickly implement or revise the same materials as a Textbook Transformation Grants team, along with the aims and lessons learned from project teams during the implementation process. The book was designed to be used in CRJU 1150 at Clayton State University. The course provides a foundation for understanding the Criminal Justice System. An overview of the criminal justice system, its history, philosophical background, and the process for achieving its goals will be discussed. Topics covered include the scope and nature of crime, the criminal justice process, the juvenile justice system, law enforcement, adjudication, corrections, and contemporary trends on the local and national levels. Student Objectives: 1. To interpret the ideologies related to Justice in the United States 2. To define and articulate the role and organization of law enforcement, courts, and corrections in the United States, including juvenile justice. 3. To critically examine the basics of law, criminology, and how crime is measured 4. To examine crime trends and issues related to incarcerated populations 5. To become familiar with the local criminal justice components.
Finding no OER textbook in Criminal Justice, the authors selected numerous articles that support the topics in the usual Introduction to Criminal Justice course. This resource provides the syllabus as well as the links to the articles.
