Modeling Parkinson’s Disease

Students give simulated injections of the neurotoxic 6-OHDA compound to the substantia nigra of the right hemisphere a simulated rat brain and then analyze data on the effect of their injection on the behavior of the rats. students can control the amount of damage to the substantia nigra and choose whether to challenge the rats with apomorphine or d-amphetamine, and they determine how many rats are treated. The simulation has an interactive model of the rat brain which provides explanations of different anatomical features and shows the area damaged by different severities of treatment. The results give the number of times each rat turns in different directions as both bar charts and an excel spreadsheet. Site includes a series of questions for students to consider while evaluating the results, with answers, a video of the rotational mouse assay, and a list of references used to create the model.
