This is a selection of some of the poems and translations by American poet and critic Eli Siegel (1902-1978), as well as critical writings by him and others on the meaning of poetry. Included are such poems as his prize-winning "Hot Afternoons Have Been in Montana," his translations of poems by Basho, Catullus, Baudelaire, La Fontaine, Verlaine and others, and his essay "The Immediate Need for Poetry." The site also contains critical writings by Ellen Reiss about Byron, H.D., Hopkins and other poets.
