Dr. Ramachandran teaches drama in an introductory class that has many pre-med students who have little interest in the subject. She was unhappy with how the course was going so she conducted a mid course assessment and made changes to her course that significantly improved student engagement and satisfaction. She offered her students a choice between a final exam and the performance of a play, and used a class period to discuss what would be useful for students to learn from a course about drama. Consequently, the students decided to replace a final exam with the performance of a play. In addition, Dr. Ramachandran and the students negotiated how the play would be graded. Ayesha describes the impact that this had on student learning within her course. Because of her success with the drama course she now adds some type of collaborative work to all of her courses. Dr. Ramachandran is joined by Nancy Wozniak. They discuss the dynamics of student group work including the use of rubrics for peer assessment within the groups. They also cover student roles within groups. Ayesha discusses the importance of having clear objectives for group work and communicating them to the students.
