We've seen amazing progress in information technology over the last fifty years.This progress has been due to both improvements in existing technologies and shifts to new ones.We'll describe progress in processing, storage and communication technology. New technologies usually begin with research prototypes, and their importance and application are difficult to predict.We'll also define exponential growth and conclude by briefly mentioning some programmable computers that preceded the electronic era.
