Avidia-Ed is a downloadable program for Macs or Windows that can be used to study the evolution of digital organisms. Similar to the old "Game of Life" the program uses colored pixels on screen to represent the digital "organisms." The digital organisms have a more sophisticated thant the original Game of Life ones in that they have a metabolism with 9 diferent "enzymes" and any of 9 different substrates can be added to their "medium." Fitness, metabolic rate and gestation time can all be tracked, and show up as diferent colors for the digital organisms in the virtual petri dish as they evolve. There are also some sample lesson plans for how to use this example of evolution to study the scientific method and evolution by natural selection.
