Opioid dependence and associated drug-related overdoses and deaths are serious public health problems in the United States.   Registered nurses are on the front lines of addressing the epidemic by educating patients to understand the risks and benefits of pain treatment options, to include opioids, and by recognizing those at risk for substance use disorder.   Changes to the Controlled Substances Act allows APRNs with appropriate training to prescribe buprenorphine which significantly increases access to medicationassisted treatment for patients who need it.
