What classification insight can be gleaned from Steam? Steam is a digital video game storefront and distribution platform in which users can make purchases and organize their content. Although a plethora of metadata is used to provide users with information needed to make purchases, Steam's user-based tags are the main source of indexing these games. Popular tags are displayed on a game's page, and users are able to sort games within their own collection according to these tags or others that they deem appropriate. However, this system has been subject to abuse via "troll" tags; or, tags with false or inflammatory information designed to provoke controversy or negative reactions. With this presentation, users will be able to understand how Steam's folksonomy functions and identify flaws evident within its system. This outline is designed to supplement a live presentation, in which presenters may showcase how user-generated tags are implemented as searchable features, marketing recommendations, and information displays. Instructors with items in their library can show how these tags are used to create categories and organize personal materials; however, this would require purchasing games to display, and a verbal explanation may be preferred. Instructors can let their class guide a search and examine tags on a game, allowing their class to determine if these tags are adequately informative and functional.
