Ubongo is a non-profit social enterprise, originating from Tanzania and with staff across Africa, which produces edutainment content for kids and caregivers. Ubongo content is divided between early childhood education (Akili and Me) and early primary grades, primarily STEM subjects (Ubongo Kids).
‘Ubongo’ means brain in Kiswahili, and the organization reaches children’s brains through its cartoon videos, radio programs, apps, and books. Ubongo believes in distributing its content through technology that is already widely available to Tanzanian and other African children, primarily television but also radio, mobile phones, and other digital devices.
In March 2020 Ubongo released a Toolkits Platform with openly-licensed educational content, primarily from Akili and Me. Subjects covered include pre-literacy, art, social-emotional learning, math, science, technology, civics, health and hygiene. Resources may be downloaded, printed, and shared for non-commercial uses. They may not be adapted. About a third of the content is in English, followed by Kiswahili, Hausa, Kinyarwanda, and French. More languages will be added.
Although Ubongo was created for an African audience, it is relevant to anyone who is interested in multicultural, engaging, and quality content.
