The Sanborn Maps Collection is a special collection of the Library of Congress. This presentation introduces participants to the original purpose and history of these fire insurance maps, the organizational structure of the digital collection, and some of the possible uses of the collection for present-day researchers and hobbyists. 

This material includes a lesson plan and slide deck for a 10-minute presentation. By the conclusion of the presentation, participants will meet the following objectives:

• accurately identify the original purpose of the Sanborn Maps collection
• accurately identify additional uses for the Sanborn Maps collection
• experiment with the different filtering options available in the system
• successfully navigate the system to retrieve a unique map

This interactive session gives participants hands-on engagement with the system and allows ample time for questions or discussion. It involves a pre- and post-assessment that demonstrates mastery of the first objective. The other objectives will be demonstrated through the chat/discussion/interactive functions.
