StoryGraph is an online organizing system that organizes and retrieves book titles for users by using democratic indexing. By the end of this session, participants will be able to: identify a recommended book using StoryGraph’s “Just for You” feature; log a read book; and explain how user-created tags inform book recommendations. Activities include: individual surveys of participants’ book preferences; general introduction to the organizing system; demonstration of user-generated tags and indices to retrieve book titles; application of Boolean logic in which “OR” operation (tags of desired literary features) increases returned title results and “NOT” operation (tags of literary features that are disliked) returns more relevant results; and demonstration of user’s tags contributing to democratic indexing of system.
