I used this resource as a synthesis activity after teaching preservice teachers about performance assessments. Instead of immediately asking students to create their own rubrics, this lesson scaffolded instruction by allowing them to build a rubric using existing headings and descriptions. They evaluated the available rubric-category headings and criteria descriptions then chose the best options to build their own rubric. The resource also contains feedback statements to help students reflect on the advantages/disadvantages of their choices. The activity provides a powerful learning experience for students while saving hours of preparation for the instructor. Instead of brainstorming multiple examples of objectives, rubric headings, and criteria descriptions; the time commitment for the instructor is reduced to printing the manipulatives, which can be reused. The students' responses were very positive with many sharing that the activity was both enjoyable and beneficial as they practiced the difficult skill of building rubrics that actually measure the objective.
