The revenue cycle is how a healthcare provider realizes revenue from the services provided to patients.  It begins at the initial point of contact with the patient and normally ends when the provider files a claim and is paid for service (or writes off a patient’s account balance if no payment is received).  Similar processes exist for hospitals (in-patient and out-patient care) and individual physician practices and specialties.

There are many players in the revenue cycle and a series of processes that are followed.  The many tools used by industrial engineers and similar practitioners can identify weaknesses and problem areas and identify opportunities for improvement.  This module explains the revenue cycle and provides students with opportunities to apply their tools and analytic techniques to solving issues in this area.
