This Department-Level Showcase uses California State University - Channel Island's Communication program as a case study example to explain how it became one of the California State University campuses' first two undergraduate “Z-Majors” (i.e., majors that offer students a zero-cost pathway for textbooks through their entire curriculum). More specifically, this showcase details the 5-step process CSUCI took from the start of “openCI” in Fall 2016 to the launch of Communication’s Z-Major in Fall 2018. The Communication department redesigned 27 courses offered in 121 sections across that time period, with 15 faculty adopters. Nearly 2,000 students have avoided having to buy a textbook in those courses resulting in a savings of $227,043.

The California State University and MERLOT have partnered to showcase how and why faculty have adopted Open Educational Resources (OER) to facilitate equitable access to their students’ course materials.   This Faculty Showcase represent Open Educational Practices where faculty are sharing their "know-how" for adopting OER in their courses.
