Hailing from Panama City, Florida, McClairen was the first Bethune-Cookman alumnus drafted in the National Football League. Drafted by the Army, he played military football for the Fort Sill Oklahoma Canoneers from 1953-1955, and reported to the Pittsburgh Steelers and played from 1955-1961. He served as head football and basketball coach, an assistant coach of the Wildcats Golf, and athletics director at Bethune-Cookman University. As one of the only students that had a Chauffeur's license, he would often drive Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune around town for important events. He received his B.S. degree in Physical Education in 1953.
