This is a problem-based learning (PBL) exercise geared towards those working in the pre-hospital emergency medical servcies (EMS) field.
There is a taxonomic hierarchy of cognitive learning as outlined in the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. This PBL reaches into the highest levels of that learning.
PBL is contextual education that allows learners to involve themselves with real-world problems and aids in the development of transferable skills (Hun School of Princeton, 2020).
It has been shown in numerous studies that PBL
- increases problem-solving abilities.
- results in better self-regulation in learning.
- improves one's level of academic achievement (Pyper, 2021).
In this PBL, you will be presented with a realistic case in which you are provided the relevant information necessary to develop an assessment of the situation, an analysis of the pathphysiology involved, and formulate a field diagnoses and treatment plan. You will also devise your radio report to medical control and draft the narrative portion of a patient care report.
At the end page, there is a resource section that provides links to tools you may find valuable in your quest for knowledge.
Instructors: If you are in need of the answers to this exercise, discussion points for the class, and a list of learning objectives, contact Dr. Chris Caulkins at c.caulkins@FreeRangeThinker.org. You must e-mail from an official work address and provide a link to your work employee directory or other such evidence to prove your identity as an educator/trainer. This is to protect the integrity of the assignment.
