Biomaterials allow robots to be more adaptable than they would be otherwise. They are able to use muscle tissue in a biohybrid robot and the robot will swim when electricity is added to it. The movement of one part of the muscle can trigger the movement of another part of the muscle making it a self stimulation process. When they used skeletal muscle, they could have multiple coils of cells around the structure, and the number of coils significantly changed the properties. When creating the section, they have the muscle grow around the skeleton for a few days and let it naturally take the shape it needs to take and add many hormones as growth factors along with nutrients. Usually the biobots are able to stay symmetrical but under certain conditions, they can stop being symmetrical. There are also robots with cardiac which continuously contracts and can not be controlled as well, but the article does not go into much detail about these.
