Advances in radiology have allowed for an increasing array of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in a wide range of medical disciplines. This has not only increased the use of radiographic equipment, but it has also increased the types of specialists who now incorporate radiology into their practice. In gastroenterology, endoscopists who perform ERCP make up one such group of nonradiologists, who are using radiation in the form of fluoroscopy as part of their practice. This increased use of fluoroscopy has increased their exposure to the risks associated with low-level radiation. Furthermore, some studies have shown that nonradiologists may receive higher doses during fluoroscopic procedures than their radiologist counterparts.¹ The purpose of this article is to highlight some practical information regarding radiation biology for endoscopists and to outline some effective ways to decrease radiation exposure during fluoroscopic procedures.
