Because too often, the author, Amanda Greer, PHd. believes, the aesthetics of girlhood are dismissed as frivolous compared with the perceived seriousness of masculine boyhood or even adult womanhood. So she create an assessment called a "zine" which allows students (of all ages) to create an assignment that asks them to communicate their ideas through girlhood aesthetics and the assignment’s form echoes its content. This blog post outlines her thinking as she created a final project assignment. She includes a showcase of student work that demonstrates a huge degree of creativity without sacrificing rigorous engagement with course readings or original research and also had them submit an "Artistic Statement" which allows them to reflect on the criteria and the assignment.
