It passed Congress in 1919. Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify it on August 18, 1920, officially adopting the amendment. What was the struggle for women's suffrage like?  The fight for women's suffrage was long and difficult, taking decades of protest and agitation. Strategies included passing suffrage acts, challenging voting laws in court, picketing, and hunger strikes. Supporters faced resistance, including heckling, jailing, and physical abuse. Who were some leaders in the women's suffrage movement? Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, Julia Ward Howe, and Henry Blackwell.
