Bacteria are everywhere…the air, the ground, on our skin, and in our mouths. In this science fair activity we invite participants to ‘open wide and step inside’ to collect, stain, and view the bacteria that live in their mouths. We gently collect a sample of cheek and gum line cells, perform a Gram stain, and then look through a microscope to examine their cells…both human and bacterial. We discuss cell shape and size and hypothesize about the role of oral bacteria. This event concludes with ‘cellfies’ for participants to take home and share.
