This video case study explores a collaboration between scientists in the US and Mexico studying migratory bird populations.
The video highlights the Bird Genoscape Project, a large research collaboration that maps the migratory routes of North American bird species. The project develops genoscapes, maps of genetic variation that connect a species’ breeding grounds (where they breed and raise their young) and wintering grounds (where they spend the winter). Genoscapes can inform where to focus conservation efforts (e.g., on breeding grounds, wintering grounds, or both) for specific species.
The “Student Worksheet” lists the questions embedded in the video. The “Educator Materials” document provides implementation tips, as well as additional discussion questions and guidance on assessing students’ responses.
