"Urban & Regional Planning Explained: Cities, Systems & Development" is an open educational resource (OER) module authored by Prep4Uni.Online. It provides an in-depth analytical and operational treatment of the spatial science, regulatory frameworks, and computational modeling paradigms that govern the development and organization of human settlements.
The module covers core domains including land use zoning, multimodal transportation planning, environmental and ecological conservation, local economic development strategies, social equity and inclusionary housing mandates, and regional watershed coordination. It explores planning principles across compact city forms, procedural/distributive equity, spatial efficiency, multihazard community resilience, and participatory digital co-design, illustrated by international case studies (Singapore, Curitiba, Netherlands). Key interactive assets include a client-side Zoning & Land-Use Density canvas simulator, an urban spatial growth systems trade-off matrix, a fully worked Floor Area Ratio (FAR) capacity and multimodal trip generation problem, and three tiers of review exercises. Available online as an interactive module and permanently archived with a persistent DOI via Zenodo.
