19th Century Schoolbooks
Digital editions of 141 19th-century schoolbooks and two surveys of historic schoolbooks written by Emeritus Professor John Nietz have been put online in a format that contains page images as well as searchable text. This is a fraction of the total Nietz Old Textbook Collection available through Special Collections, University Library System, University of Pittsburgh, which began with 9000 volumes but has since grown to more than 16,000. The books include some by Noah Webster and Holmes McGuffey as well as lesser-known authors and cover such subjects as history, geography, readin,g arithmetic, spelling, government, penmanship, biology, and more. The textbooks reveal much about the society in which they were used, including gender relations, race relations, and religious norms.
