This book is authored by two musicians who play the drum rhythms of the Republic of Congo. It is a compilation of most of the rhythms played by the Congolese National Dance Company of Brazzaville, Congo and brought to the United States by musician-immigrants. The rhythms are written in standard Western musical notation as well as in a time-unit-box-system usable by percussionists who do not know standard notation. Where we had the information, the rhythms are accompanied by the local cultural context in which they are used. The introduction also describes the larger cultural milieu for the ngoma, the drum used for these rhythms.
