A free, open-access course in sustainable development from the Sustainability Science Program at Harvard Kennedy School, developed by Alicia G. Harley and William C. Clark from more than two decades of teaching at the college, graduate, and professional levels. The course links the theory of sustainability science with practice: 23 units across five parts develop a framework for understanding the intertwined nature–society systems of the Anthropocene and the capacities needed to guide development pathways toward sustainability. Materials include in-depth teaching cases (London, Alaska, and Appalachia), an applied student-case assignment with regional research guides, learning games and simulations (the Fishbanks fishery game and NetLogo models), a downloadable syllabus, and unit-by-unit guides to readings and discussion. All course materials are free to use and adapt under a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, with no enrollment or account required. Instructors are welcome to adopt or adapt the full course for their own classrooms; self-guided learners can work through it independently.
