KasiKanvas is a conversation-based entrepreneurship framework developed by North-West University to help entrepreneurs explore, clarify and test business ideas before investing significant time or money. It was developed through engagement, reflection and testing with township entrepreneurs in Ikageng, Potchefstroom, South Africa, and is designed particularly for contexts where conventional business-planning tools may feel overly technical or disconnected from lived experience.
Rather than beginning with formal business terminology, KasiKanvas begins with conversation, real people, real places and practical experience. The framework guides users through four phases — Ground the Reality, Align the Idea, Test the Practicality and Activate Commitment — using 14 conversation cards. These help entrepreneurs examine the problem they have noticed, the people affected, the proposed solution, access and delivery, available resources, costs and pricing, small-scale testing, and the next practical action.
KasiKanvas can be used by individual entrepreneurs or within facilitated workshops, mentoring programmes, university and TVET entrepreneurship education, community-development initiatives, incubators and other enterprise-support programmes. Supporting resources include the KasiKanvas Conversation Framework, participant guide, instructional videos and the KasiKanvas Pitch Journey, which helps entrepreneurs turn their completed KasiKanvas conversations into a clear and credible pitch.
The methodology emphasises five principles: staying grounded in real stories; clarity before complexity; starting with existing strengths; testing before investing more; and movement rather than perfection.
KasiKanvas was developed through the UCDP-supported Entrepreneurship Programme at North-West University and is released under a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA licence for public-good use, adaptation and entrepreneurship development.
