Overview:Free eLibrary Portal (FRELIP) is a nonprofit, open knowledge and educational-resource initiative dedicated to reducing information inequality by improving free and equitable access to scholarly, educational and research resources, particularly for learners, educators and researchers in Africa and other underserved communities. FRELIP provides a growing discovery environment for open-access journals and articles, institutional repositories, theses and dissertations, open educational resources (OER), research guides and learning materials. Its services bring together openly available resources from multiple sources and make them easier to discover and use through integrated search, subject-based organisation and research-support tools. FRELIP also promotes open education, open access, information literacy and lifelong learning. Through its learning and research-support services, the initiative seeks to connect students, teachers, researchers, librarians and the wider public with credible knowledge that may otherwise be difficult to discover or afford. FRELIP increasingly combines established library and information-management approaches—including metadata, indexing, classification and resource discovery—with open-source technologies and emerging AI-assisted knowledge-discovery tools. The initiative's broader goal is to build an inclusive open knowledge ecosystem in which financial, geographic and technological barriers do not prevent people from accessing the information and educational resources they need to learn, teach, conduct research and contribute to society.
