Nanotechnology in Mechanical Engineering Explained: Advanced Materials & System Performance is an open-access, accreditation-aligned curriculum module developed under the PREP4UNI.ONLINE OER Initiative for undergraduate engineering candidates, materials scientists, and STEM educators. Structured in accordance with the Washington Accord, EUR-ACE, and IEA Global Engineering Competency frameworks, this module bridges fundamental nanoscale physics with continuum mechanical engineering, smart materials, and high-performance structural systems.
The technical scope covers Hall-Petch grain boundary strengthening, modified Rule of Mixtures for nanocomposites, specific surface area scaling, and Maxwell colloidal nanofluid thermal transport. Smart systems coverage includes Nitinol shape memory alloy phase transformation kinetics and MEMS resonant micro-cantilever mass sensors. Industrial case studies examine CNT agglomeration in wind turbine spars, thermal barrier coating spalling in jet engines, nanofluid microchannel clogging, Nitinol flap actuator functional fatigue, and MEMS capacitive stiction. The resource integrates systems engineering trade-off matrices, seven industrial case studies, an interactive HTML5 canvas nanocomposite stiffness simulator, and six multi-step quantitative worked examples with explicit engineering interpretations.
