'You studied the constitutional basis for the 3 branches of government in Module 2. You studied the legislative branch in Module 3. You studied the executive branch in Module 4. And for this module, you will be studying the judicial branch, civil rights and civil liberties.

Most of us will enjoy the pleasure of taking part in the court system at one time or another in our life. If you've been to traffic court, you got an introduction to the state court system. In this module, however, you will learn about the federal court system. In addition to the structure of the federal court system, you will also learn how the courts play an important role in defining and protecting our civil liberties and civil rights. Civil liberties are unalienable rights that, according to the Constitution, the government is not allowed to take away. These include the freedoms of speech, assembly, press, religion and many others. In general, civil liberties are protections against the government. Civil rights are considered to be positive acts of the government to prohibit race, sex and religious discrimination. The courts are empowered with the responsibility to decide whether acts of the government or the people are infringing on our civil liberties and civil rights.'
