Kako nastane seme in zakaj pri tem celice tudi umirajo? / How the seed develops and why the cells also need to die?
This video was recorded at Mednarodni posvet Biološka znanost in družba: Organizmi kot živi sistemi / International Conference Bioscience and Society: Organisms as living systems. V razvoju organov večceličnih organizmov je pomembno usklajeno delovanje različnih mehanizmov rasti – delitve celic, povečevanja celic in tudi programirane celične smrti. Na primeru razvoja semena koruze opisujem delitev in rast celic, katere del je tudi povečevanje količine DNA v jedrih. V razvoju semena se morajo nekatere celice umakniti novonastalemu tkivu in nadzorovano odmrejo, nekatere celice pa opravljajo svojo nalogo še po smrti. Služijo na primer za učinkovito prevajanje snovi ali pa v »mumificiranem« stanju skladiščijo založne snovi do kalitve semena. In the development of organs in multicellular organisms, various mechanisms of growth are well coordinated – cell division, cell growth and also programmed cell death. Using maize seed as an example, I describe the division of cells in the cell cycle and subsequent growth of these cells, where multiple rounds of DNA duplication plays an important role. On the other hand, some cells must give way to the newly grown tissues and die in a controlled fashion. Some cells have a physiological function even after death, e.g. in effective transport of solutes or in storage of nutrients in their mummified bodies until seed germination.
