This activity demonsrtates a structural engineering discrepant event. Have a adolescent child, with an approximate weight of 100lb., stand on top of an empty aluminum soda can with one foot. The can must not contain any dents. The soda can will support the weight of the child. Take a small stick the size of a pencil [a pencil may be used for this demonstration] and strike the side of the can. The can will collapse. Denting the side of the can reduces the structural integrity of the can, resulting in the collapse of the can.
