This discrepant event activity demonstrates the effect of friction caused by an object passing through air.

This classic demonstration utilizes a sheet of paper and a book. 

The demonstrator holds the book and paper side by side at a height of 1 meter, and drops them. 

The paper falls at a slower rate than the book due to friction. 

Next, the demonstrator places the paper on top of the book and drops the paper/book unit, and both objects fall at a rapid rate.
