American Cancer Society: The Risks of Smokeless Tobacco

Smokeless tobacco products are not a safe substitute for tobacco smoking. Harmful health effects include: oral and throat cancer, cancer in the esophagus, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, increased risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke, addiction to nicotine, Leukoplakia (white sores in the mouth that can become cancer), receding gums, bone loss around the roots of the teeth, abrasion of teeth, tooth loss, stained teeth, and bad breath. The snuff and chewing tobacco products are less lethal than cigarettes. But even though they are marketed as a less harmful alternative to smoking, these products can be deadly.
