Mr. Hassanally Effendi symbolizes a historic connection between the people of Turkey and Pakistan. Mr. Effendi, a born Sindhi, was awarded two Turkish titles, “Effendi” and “Bey” by Turkish government in 19th century on account of mobilizing the people of Sindh to help people of Turkey during the Turkish-Russian war in 1870s and his founding an educational institution with the name of Sindh Madressatul Islam (SMI) in Karachi in 1885. Because of services rendered by him for the people of Turkey, Mr. Effendi was also appointed as honorary Turkish Consul in Karachi; an appointment that he held till his demise in 1895.
