Research Objective: The work environment of hospital nurses has become a focal point of research and management due to its influence on the quality of nursing care as well as nurses’ job outcomes. The work environment is defined as organizational features that facilitate or undermine the professional autonomy of registered nurses. Most work environment research has utilized the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI), a National Quality Forum nursing care performance standard endorsed since 2004. This 31-item nurse survey instrument has generated sizable evidence globally about nurse work environments. The integration of this evidence is needed to guide management and research efforts on work environments. The goal of this research was to conduct a meta-analysis of findings from empirical studies that linked the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index composite score to a variety of health and job outcomes.
