The Biltmore Forest School was the first to provide vocational forestry education in America. It was established in American history when the Progressive Movement directed education, public policy development, and social growth and development. Forestry education was created in response to the need for well-trained foresters to manage America's public and private forests. Its early development was primarily the result of efforts by Gifford Pinchot, who uncovered the need for forestry schools, and Carl Alwin Schenck, who established the first forestry school in America – the Biltmore Forest School. It was the first school to teach forestry as a distinct field of study in the United States. It was also the first school to teach forest management principles in a lab with hands-on instruction. The Biltmore Forest School may also have been the first school in America to offer an undergraduate degree using distance education as the learning medium. It was the first school to manage a privately-owned forest in the United States for the distinct purpose of returning a profit.
