He Jiankui, a scientist in China has managed to modify the CCR5 gene of embryos in order to make the white blood cells immune to HIV when the father was HIV positive. This change to the embryos will be passed down to the embryo's children(when they are older if they have children) and is permanent so their children will also be immune to HIV. They do not know for sure the edit he made does not have any negative effects on brain development. He Jiankui was arrested for not obeying ethical rules and has since been released, but his advancement in editing an embryo has major potential in curing diseases and fixing genetic disorders in the future.

There are some ethical issues on what we will be allowed to edit once the technology gets more advanced.
